The article discusses the compatibility of objects of modern architecture with historically established architectural environment in the medium and small towns of the Nizhegorodskoe Povolzhie. During the period of 1930 — early 2010s in the development of these towns four stages are allocated. For each of them we define priority models of combinations of new buildings with historic encirclement. We identify the main trends of modern construction in the historic centers and their impact on the condition of historical and architectural environment.
