Ray theory of light diffraction

The authors reveal the insufficiency of the local interpretation of the wave diffraction phenomenon in the theory of the boundary diffracted wave of Yung-Rubinovich-Wolf as well as the falsity of the wide-spread assertion that this theory is a rigorous mathematical consequence of the theory of Frenel-Kirchhoff diffraction. The authors suggest a more realistic pattern of diffraction in the context of which the expressions of the diffraction angles and of the intensity in the area of the geometrical shadow were received. The peculiarities and the possible applications of the suggested theory of diffraction are discussed. The Fermat principle for geometrical optics, given the ray of light travels close to an obstacle boundary, is made more precise.
